REGIONAL FINALISTS

ANNOUNCED FEBRUARY 8, 2013

It’s finally time to announce our regional finalists for Engage 2012!

We were blown away by the quality and thoughtfulness of the entries we received. Students sent in videos that examined pertinent election issues ranging from standardized testing in schools to universal healthcare to voter laws and everything in between. Participants interviewed fellow students, teachers, and members of their communities, documenting the experiences of their subjects and asking critical questions about our nation’s future. In some instances, such as with the 4th-grade class of Crocker Highlands Elementary School in Oakland, California, students wrote and recorded op-eds about a proposed law that would mandate stricter food labeling for GMOs. What was especially exciting to read in submitted entry forms was that participants were not just learning how to produce journalistic multimedia stories, but were gaining deeper insight into the policies and social issues that affect their schools and neighborhoods, friends and families.

Before we go further, we’d like to thank every student who sent in a video. Your participation in this challenge means that you have contributed to national discussions about social issues that don’t just impact voters, but students like you. We would also like to give special thanks to the teachers and educators who encouraged their classrooms to take the challenge in addition to teaching their scheduled curriculum. We are excited this project garnered interest from educators as far as Anchorage, Alaska, and even from those teaching overseas. Congratulations to everyone who took the challenge—you deserve it.

A few notes: Regional finalists have been organized by region, grade level, and topic. We received several entries in particular from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, California, and Natomas Charter School in Sacramento, California. Semifinalists will be announced February 22, 2013.

And now, without further ado, onto the regional finalists! Congratulations to:
